An Eternal Ode to the Desert's Jewel

This 1991 square-format heavy-color masterpiece (50cm×50cm) elevates Dunhuang's cultural icon – the Crescent Moon Spring – into a spiritual vessel. Geng Yukun constructs a fantastical visual cosmos within compact dimensions through mineral pigments and layered gold leaf:

Symphony of Hues:

Beneath a lapis lazuli night sky, the jade-green crescent spring nestles in flowing gold dunes, while cinnabar-dusted camel silhouettes converse mysteriously with cobalt starfields

Textural Alchemy:

Interwoven sand grains, gold powder, and impasto pigments recreate wind-eroded desert textures, creating tangible dimensionality that transcends traditional painting

Eastern Philosophy:

The square-in-circle composition echoes the ancient "Round Heaven, Square Earth" cosmology. The spring-moon duality symbolizes eternal vitality within barrenness, serving as a spiritual totem for New Chinese-style home decor

Reawakening the Silk Road's Legacy

Created in 1991 during Dunhuangology's global renaissance, this work emerged after Geng Yukun's third research pilgrimage to the Mogao Caves:

"I see the Crescent Moon Spring as Dunhuang's eye – an indomitable life force that defied millenniums of swallowing sands, epitomizing Chinese civilization's resilience."
